This album contains the Grand Etudes after Paganini by Franz Liszt and was recorded in a live performance at the UMTA Convention on October of 1993. The Etudes are: I. Preludio – Andante; Etude – Non troppo lento; II. Andante – Andantino capriccioso; III. La Campanella – Allegretto; IV. Vivo; V. Allegretto – “The Chase”; and VI. Quasi Presto.
In a Salt Lake Tribune concert review it was said about Ms. Brown’s playing, “Even among big-name pianists, there are remarkably few who are able to play music of Liszt so convincingly. Frequently Liszt is played with such spasmodic, choppy surges that the music is incomprehensible. Artur Rubinstein was a splendid exception and so is Brown”.
Another wrote “Her performance of the Pagannini Etudes was brilliant and stylish and brought out levels of musical understanding rare in performances of works presenting such enormous technical challenges. One cannot imagine the hours she lavished on those pieces. The performance was worthy of presentation in Abravanel Hall.”
